The Archives will have expert staff on hand to show members of the public what the collection offers and how information seekers can find what they need.

The one-hour sessions will cover the types of documents and other items held in the Archives collection, which includes a wealth of war service and immigration records.

The National Archives of Australia preserves important Commonwealth records, which are eligible for release to the public after 30 years. As well as defence and immigration papers, the collection includes details of government, employment, security and business dealings over the years.

The new help sessions will provide family historians and other researchers with step-by-step instruction on how to search the collection and how to request original documents for viewing in the National Archives reading room in Canberra.

After the session, the reading room will remain open until 9pm (the normal Tuesday hours) so those attending can have a practice run with supervision.

The first session is at 4pm on Tuesday 20 March 2007. Those interested in attending can find dates on the National Archives of Australia website www.naa.gov.au.

Places are limited and bookings are essential to register, email events@naa.gov.au or phone (02) 6212 3900.
