Under the Archives Act 1983 a key function of the Archives is 'to ensure the conservation and preservation of the existing and future archival resources of the Commonwealth'.  As an executive agency under the Public Service Act 1999 and a prescribed agency under the Financial Management and Accountability Act 1997, the Archives is also required to operate within a corporate governance framework that is supported by sound risk management and effective business continuity management.

The Archives' National Disaster Preparedness and Recovery Strategy for Archival Records (pdf, 179kb) supports our obligation to preserve the archival resources of the Commonwealth by reducing the likelihood and impact on records of a disaster or incident.
