Machinery of government changes

‘Machinery of government changes’ (MoG changes) or ‘administrative re-arrangements’ are terms used to describe a variety of organisational or functional changes that affect the Australian Government.

These changes usually happen after elections and the most common types are:

  • transfer of business from one agency to another
  • transfer of a whole agency from one portfolio to another
  • transfer of business to or from another government jurisdiction (eg from state to Commonwealth)
  • closure of an agency, with its business either being discontinued, taken on by a portfolio department or privatised.

When any of these changes happen, ownership of information and records relating to transferred business activities will belong to the gaining agency or organisation.
