Records classification tool

A records classification tool is a hierarchical representation of terms that allow you to group similar characteristics and give the group a name or title often from a predetermined list or controlled vocabulary. Using a records classification tool allows you to arrange and group your information according to the activities of the agency.

Classification allows you to:

  • link information and records relating to the same activity or purpose
  • be consistent in titling
  • develop a systematic framework for the creation, management and disposal of records
  • enhance information access and retrieval
  • share information and other resources between government agencies
