B A Boyle & Associates had been contracted to design and supply the hydraulically operated stern door which was manufactured by Newcastle Engineering Pty Limited. After the failure of the door during trials, new hydraulic rams, modified door structure and new gear quadrants were fitted and the door track on the ship modified.

The drawings in this series cover elevations, perspectives, fittings, lighting and furniture, and are mostly copies that have been amended or altered by the dockyard. A series of photographs of some of these drawings is held as series M2890.

The makers’ handbooks in this series were supplied by manufacturers and shipbuilders for the installation and fitting of parts to the Empress of Australia.

The drawings in this series cover the design, general arrangement and fit out of the Empress of Australia, and were used in the construction of the vessel.

The first set of drawings deals mainly with the parts for side lights, watertight doors and windows; the second set concerns mainly the parts for and the arrangement of the sprinkler system; the third set relates to the air conditioning system.

Handbooks in this series relate to electrical equipment and consist of installation, operating and instruction manuals, and booklets of electrical spares. The earliest appears to date from 1945.

The five items in this series were found scattered among other records and were brought together to form a series. They consist of forging and miscellaneous sketches, memoranda and a materials listing.

The twelve miscellaneous items in this series consist of drawings, letters, tables, diagrams, calculations, invoices, certificates, forms and issue books.

This series consists of machinery unit sketches which comprise detailed drawings of the layout, arrangement and fitting of piping for machinery or machinery parts on the ship. A copy was placed on the ship and one was left with the ship’s builder, Cockatoo Docks & Engineering Co. Pty Limited.

This register has sections covering sundry sketches, boilers, piping systems, pipe arrangement drawings, guidance drawings and sketch sheets. The register is the main control record for the series of mechanical drawings of the vessel in series M2875, as well as for other mechanical drawings.

This book functions as a part register to the drawings of the Empress of Australia in series M2875 and C3512.

This series is a collection of the results from the sea trials conducted in 1964. The records show the final results from the main machinery trials, depicted in graphs and tables.

This series consists of two folders: ‘Diagrams and arrangements of low power circuits’ and ‘Diagrams of electric lighting and power circuits’.
