The refrigerated cargo steamers TSS Fordsdale and Ferndale were not allocated Cockatoo Dockyard ship numbers, but were known by their Commonwealth Line ship numbers 47 and 48. At the time of their construction for the Commonwealth Government Line, they were the largest and fastest merchant ships built in Australia. They were laid down on 29 March 1922 and 28 June 1923, launched on 21 June 1923 and 12 June 1924, and completed on 13 March 1924 and 20 October 1924 respectively.
