Volunteers assisting the Archives
The National Archives is indebted to members of the community who have volunteered their services to make its collection a more accessible public resource.
The Archives was saddened by news of the death of Ken Haw in July 2002. Ken was a volunteer with the Archives for many years, working initially with the Mildenhall group identifying images of early Canberra and then recording that information on the Archives’ collection database, RecordSearch. More recently Ken worked on Displaced Persons records and a photographic collection of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Authority. His twice-weekly visits over many years greatly enhanced the accessibility of these collections.
Members of the Heraldry and Genealogical Society of Canberra have for several years provided the Archives with valuable assistance by repackaging records in archival folders and annotating the folders with identifying information. Information about each record item is then entered by Archives’ staff onto the RecordSearch database.
The volunteers completed their work on the personnel records of World War One soldiers in September 2002. They then commenced another long-term project to repackage Courts-Martial files, including war crimes trials, created from 1901 and held in the Canberra office of the Archives. The following volunteers have taken part in the project:
| Henny Brookhouse | Robyn Middleton |
| Gladys Clarke | Pauline Neville |
| Jean Fominas | Peter Procter |
| Kerrie Gray | Ruth Rodgers |
| Pat Gray | Joyce Stevens |
| Rhonda Kerr | Frank Thompson |
| Jo Lilienthal | Pam Thompson |
| Lesley McCann |
Over the past year Robert Le Maistre has volunteered his services in the Adelaide office, assisting with the Archives’ forthcoming online publication of his index to the microfilmed British Registers of Ships.
Members of the Australian Historical Association’s Library and Archives User Group have assisted the Archives by providing comments on appraisal issues considered by the Archives and records disposal authorities, including Hilary Golder, Paul Jones and Ann-Mari Jordens.
