Visitors of overseas delegations to the National Archives

August 2002

Professor Eric Ketelaar, Professor of Archivistics, University of Amsterdam, visited the National Archives on 8 and 9 August. Professor Ketelaar presented a paper ‘Comparing National Archives: Benchmarking through Comparative Archivistics’ to Archives’ staff in a professional development seminar and attended the National Scholarly Communications Forum Round Table on Privacy.

On 12 August, Dr Feng Huiling, Vice President of Renmin University of China and Ms Wang Jian, Associate Dean of Archives College in Renmin University of China visited the Sydney office to learn about National Archives’ services and functions and to tour the Archives’ facilities.

September 2002

On 9–10 September the Archives hosted a visit from the Head of the Electronic Records Division, Mr Azemi Abdul Aziz, and a senior official from the Standard and Inspectorate Division, Mr Kamaruddin Abdul Aziz, of the National Archives of Malaysia. Discussions focused on standards and policies for the management and preservation of electronic records.

October 2002

A delegation from the State Archives Department of Vietnam, led by Deputy Director-General Nguyen Thi Tam, visited the Archives on 21 October in Canberra and 30 October in Sydney, to discuss facilities and preservation issues.

November 2002

On 5 November Mr Patrick O’Reilly, Director of Portfolio Affairs with the Department of Canadian Heritage, Government of Canada, visited the Archives to explore the outreach activities of the Archives, its links with other collecting organisations (including the National Archives of Canada) and its reporting framework.

January 2003

A senior delegation from the Sarawak State Library, led by Acting Chief Executive Officer Ms Rashidah Hj Bolhassan, visited the Archives on 28 and 29 January. The delegation sought information on practices and procedures in records management and archives, preservation strategies, computerised databases and the construction of Archives’ buildings. The Sarawak State Library, established three years ago, is planning to establish a government archives within the Library.

February 2003

On 26 February Ms Meredith Cook, Research Fellow, The Constitution Unit, University College London, visited the Archives to discuss Australia’s experience with Freedom of Information legislation.

March 2003

On 7 March Mr Masaya Shiomitsu, Specialist for Archival Affairs, Mr Hiromitsu Watanabe, Section Chief of Liaison and Coordination Section, and Mr Eiji Ide, Section Chief of First Accounting Section, from the National Archives of Japan visited the Archives to discuss the management of electronic records, recordkeeping training, public access to World War II war crimes records and exhibitions, public events, websites and publications.

On 10 March the Archives hosted a visit from the National Archivist of Poland, Professor Daria Nalecz, the Managing Director of the State Archives of Poland, Dr Andrew Biernat, and the current and former Presidents of the Polish Historical Institute in Australia, Ms Wanda Horky and Mr Andrew Kleeberg. The Polish delegation was interested in exchanging views regarding the management of electronic records, electronic access to archival collections, and the preservation of electronic records.

Ms Dianne Macaskill, Chief Archivist of Archives New Zealand, visited the National Archives on 13 March, to discuss issues including digitisation, metadata and portals.

April 2003

Dr Young Choon Lee, senior researcher with the National Institute of Korean History, visited the Archives on 22 April. The Institute expressed interest in identifying what records relating to the Korean War are held by a number of Australian institutions, including the Archives and the Australian War Memorial.

May 2003

Ms Miriam Goldman of the Jewish Museum in Berlin visited the Archives on 19 May to discuss the Archives’ education program and research services provided for the public.

On 28 May three researchers from South Korea, Professor Hyeran Suh, Professor Eun-Gyoung Seo and Dr Soyeon Lee, visited the National Archives to learn about the management of electronic records in Australia. The research team is developing a national plan for ensuring authentic electronic recordkeeping in South Korea.
