The faces appearing on the cover represent just a handful of the people who, in significant and small ways, have helped shape our nation. The images come from various photographic collections held by the National Archives. The largest of these is the Australian Overseas Information Service (AOIS) collection which contains more than 100 000 black and white photographs and 30 000 colour negatives taken between 1946 and 1971. A sample of photographs from the AOIS collection can be seen on our website.
