To preserve valuable Commonwealth records as part of the archival resources of Australia and make them accessible to present and future generations

To fulfil its mission the National Archives will:

  • make arrangements for the management and storage of Commonwealth records
  • help Commonwealth agencies manage records
  • select valuable records for permanent retention as archives
  • store and preserve archives in its own repositories
  • make archives accessible to users to meet their needs.
