Title
COCKATOO ISLAND DOCKYARD

A Guide to the Records by Margaret Chambers

About this guide For over one hundred years Cockatoo Island was one of the busiest places in Sydney Harbour. Thousands of people worked at the dockyard and contributed their skills to the vessels that were built or refitted there. This comprehensive guide describes the records of that long period of activity, including the dockyard’s history, facilities, ships, aircraft and fast boats. It also covers docking and launching records, administrative records, photographs and publications. For those interested in the history and development of Australian ship building, this guide opens the way to a treasure trove of design and engineering information.

About the author Margaret Chambers has an MA in History from the University of Melbourne. She worked for 11 years in the National Archives offices in Sydney and Melbourne and, in 1990, was seconded to the Australian National Maritime Museum to establish an archives section. In 1991 she moved to the Department of Defence to manage the arrangement and description of the Cockatoo Island Dockyard records. She subsequently returned to the National Archives where she compiled Finding Families: The Guide to the National Archives of Australia for Genealogists, published in 1998.
