The Australian Society of Archivists Inc. (ASA) is the peak professional body for archivists in Australia. It aims to:

Standards Australia develops technological and business standards. These standards establish a common language that defines quality and ensures consistency where they are implemented.

The most important standards for records management are:

AS 4390 and AS ISO 15489 Records management standards

The National Archives played a key role in the creation of the first Australian Standard for Records Management, AS 4390. In March 2002 Standards Australia officially withdrew AS 4390 and released a new Australian Standard for Records Management, AS ISO 15489.

AS 5044 Online resource discovery metadata

The National Archives has also had a key role in the creation of the AGLS metadata standard, AS5044. This is the national standard for online resource discovery and has been mandated for use on all Australian Government websites. The Commonwealth Implementation Manual for this standard is available.

ASO 5090 Work process analysis for recordkeeping

This a standard providing organisations with tools to assist them analyse their business processes. This standard is very effective when used in conjuntion with AS ISO 15489 and the DIRKS methodology.
