Australians interested in exploring their Dutch family heritage will now have easier access to key historic records thanks to an international partnership delivered by National Archives of Australia.

A multi-year, 4-stage effort to digitise Dutch migration records is now complete, with over 1,280 of these records now available to view online.

Doris Voorbraak, the Deputy Head of Mission of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, says the records are rich with stories of those who crossed the ocean in search of a new life in Australia.

'In the aftermath of the Second World War, thousands of families and individuals migrated from the Netherlands to Australia.

'These migration records, now digitised and preserved for future generations, represent the beginning of their courageous journeys.'

Danni McGowen, National Archives' Acting Assistant Director-General, Access and Public Engagement, says the records also chronicle the reasons why migrants relocated to Australia, helping to create a fuller picture of the paths these individuals chose.

'Whether they were hoping for a better life, relocating for love or simply seeking an adventure on the other side of the world, their diverse journeys are captured within thousands of pages of records.

'Thanks to this partnership, stories like these can be explored online from anywhere in the world.'

Visitors to National Archives' National Office in Parkes, Canberra, can also view a physical display celebrating the last stage of the project.

This project has been assisted by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Australia, the Nationaal Archief in the Netherlands and the Huygens Instituut for the History of the Netherlands.
