A new Darwin home for National Archives of Australia

Thursday, 29 August 2024

National Archives of Australia’s new Northern Territory Office is now open at 24 Mitchell St Darwin City, located on the land of the Larrakia people.

Our new home in central Darwin has been thoughtfully designed with purpose-built, culturally appropriate spaces to facilitate greater engagement with First Nations communities.

The new office was officially opened with a cultural ceremony led by members of the Larrakia community. During the ceremony, boxes of records were tied with straps made from woven pandanus for connection to country and to keep them safe and secure, before being transferred to our new location. These records and the stories held within them will be kept at our Darwin City site.

National Archives collects, preserves and facilitates access to records of the Australian Government records. With locations across the country, we connect Australians with the nation's memory, their identity and history.
