Powerful social change exhibition draws to a close

Tuesday, 9 May 2023

If you are yet to see National Archives of Australia’s powerful exhibition Disrupt, persist, invent: Australians in an ever-changing world, you better mark it in your calendar as the exhibition is drawing to a close.

Ending on 12 June, the exhibition uncovers some fascinating, empowering and emotional stories of social change. From women's rights, marriage equality, science and technological invention to saying ‘sorry’, this exhibition pays tribute to the ordinary and extraordinary people who’ve made our nation what it is today.

Featuring archival records, audio-visual material and video portraits from the national archival collection, as well as a number of feature objects on loan from the National Museum of Australia and the Museum of Australian Democracy, exhibition curator Catriona Donnelly says the exhibition is about more than activism and activists.

‘The world is in a constant state of change. People influence change in so many ways – through protests and demonstrations, through invention and innovation, voting in elections, creating and promoting arts and culture, and ensuring the marginalised in our community are represented.’

‘In this exhibition we explore the question, ‘how do you change the world?’ and we challenge our visitors to think about how the actions of those who have gone before us, have changed our society.’

‘Walking away from this exhibition may even inspire you to create change in your own community.’

Disrupt, persist, invent: Australians in an ever-changing world is open daily to the public from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Entry is free.
