National Archives of Australia continues to implement all recommendations of the Review of 2003 Cabinet records transfer to the National Archives of Australia.
The Review was commissioned by the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (PM&C) to examine the circumstances surrounding the 2020 transfer of Cabinet records from PM&C to National Archives.
The Richardson Review was released in January 2024 with 3 recommendations relating to National Archives:
For the Director-General of National Archives to secure a Top Secret Positive Vetting (TSPV) security clearance
This recommendation is being addressed in line with government policy.
For National Archives, with the support of the PM&C, to review its records authorities relevant to Cabinet records
National Archives has met with PM&C's Cabinet Division to progress a new draft of the records authority for Cabinet records and this work is continuing.
For National Archives to consider including National Security Cabinet (NSC) records in the annual public release process
National Archives will include a selection of NSC records in the annual public release process in the same way as records of the full Cabinet. Like all records, NSC records will be subject to access examination before they can be released.
National Archives looks forward to releasing select 2004 Cabinet records on 1 January 2025.
