About this record
This is a black-and-white photograph of the Rt Hon. Harold Holt, Australia's seventeenth Prime Minister. It shows him alongside Lyndon Baines Johnson, the first United States President to visit Australia, and First Lady 'Lady Bird' Johnson in October 1966. Holt had only been Prime Minister since January 1966 after being elected leader by the Liberal parliamentarians as a result of Menzies' resignation. He is most famously known as the Prime Minister who went missing in December 1967 while swimming off Cheviot Beach in Victoria. His body was never recovered.
