[Heading:] 'White Aust.' change urged
MELBOURNE, Sat. – The term White Australia policy should be modified, Victorian chief president of the Australian Natives' Association Dimelow said today.
The change would avoid charges of racial discrimination, he added.
The A.N.A. [Australian Natives’ Association] agreed with the Australian economic advisers in Asiatic countries that the change of name would be a solution.
Mr. Dimelow was commenting on the World Council of Churches' statement in Canberra that the title White Australia was arrogant.
[Subheading:] Economic, Not Racial
He said the White Australia policy was introduced largely for economic protection.
It was not based on racial prejudices.
An informal conference between the board of directors of the A.N.A. and delegates of the Australia-India association had been held in January.
Conference had agreed that Australia should have the right to limit migration.
It also expressed the view that all thinking Asiatics would not like unrestricted migration of coloured people to Australia.
