[Underlined heading:] PRESS STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER FOR IMMIGRATION, THE HON. A.J. FORBES, M.P., ON "HOMOGENEOUS SOCIETY".
The Minister for Immigration, Dr. Forbes, said in Canberra today that in view of current public discussion he wishes to make crystal clear the Government’s determination to maintain a predominantly homogeneous society.
Dr Forbes said that there should be no misunderstandings about the Government’s concept of homogeneity.
He said: "The expression 'homogeneous society', when applied to the aims of immigration policy, is intended to mean a cohesive integrated society, one that is essentially undivided, without permanent minorities and free of avoidable tensions."
Dr Forbes said that in the development of its immigration policies, the Government had consistently pursued a prudent course based on Australia’s national interests and guided by the experience of others.
He was confident that these policies and their objectives had the full support of Australian people.
