The National Archives holds a fascinating collection of sound recordings including interviews, speeches, plays, documentaries, music and sports broadcasts.
The sound recordings are preserved on gramophone disc, tape, cassette and CD.
They include:
- important historical events such as Prime Minister Chifley's declaration of peace in 1945
- interviews with famous Australians such as Sir Donald Bradman
- sound material from the personal records of prime ministers
- an extensive collection of ABC material such as radio and television programs and the music of Australian composers
- recordings relating to royal commissions, such as the 1954 Royal Commission on Espionage.
