Records related to the Afghanistan Inquiry and the Office of the Special Investigator to address matters raised by the Inquiry
This document notifies Australian Government agencies and other agents or people in possession of Commonwealth records that I have imposed a disposal freeze on Commonwealth records that relate to the findings of the Inspector-General of the Australian Defence Force (IGADF) Afghanistan Inquiry which considered Australian Defence Force operations in Afghanistan from 2005 to 2016 (the Inquiry), and that will support the work of the Office of the Special Investigator and any other subsequent actions by the Government.
Records relating to Australian Defence Force members’ and veterans’ suicides, and suicide prevention
A targeted records retention notice (RRN) was issued to selected Commonwealth agencies on 23 September 2021 to support the production of records for the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide. If your agency head or information and records manager has not received a formal notice from the National Archives it is unlikely that your agency will be required to produce records for the Royal Commission. The notice remains in force until further notice from the National Archives.
The notice suspends the National Archives’ permission to destroy or transfer records that may be required by the Royal Commission. Agencies in receipt of the notice are legally obliged to preserve any such records.
The named Australian Government agencies in this retention notice are required by law to protect from destruction any relevant records subject to this notice. If other agencies identify potentially relevant records they should advise the National Archives as soon as possible
This notice has been published on the National Archives’ Records disposal freezes and retention notices website page.
Any questions in relation to the records retention notice may be directed to the National Archives via the Agency Service Centre.Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War
