Inventing wi-fi: How Australian scientists changed the world

Meet research scientist and engineer Dr Terry Percival. He worked with a team of scientists to create an invention that would change the world.

Pre-viewing questions

  1. The video clip you are about to watch is about the invention of high-speed wireless internet (wi-fi). What do you know about wi-fi? Do you understand how it works? What questions do you have about this technology?
  2. Before the invention of wi-fi, cables and wires were required to connect devices to the internet. Have the adults in your life told you about their experiences using older technology like dial-up internet? What do you know about how dial-up internet worked? In what ways did wi-fi improve on earlier methods of connecting to the internet?
  3. Today, devices like smartphones, tablets, laptops and gaming consoles are all wi-fi enabled. How do you use wi-fi in your daily life? What do you imagine the world would be like if we did not have wi-fi?
  4. The team that invented wi-fi had experience working with radio telescopes – large satellite dishes that could transmit data between Earth and space. How do you think this knowledge and experience helped them to develop wi-fi technology? What kinds of challenges do you think they had to overcome to transmit data between devices on Earth?
  5. Wi-Fi was invented in Australia by the team of scientists and engineers at Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). CSIRO is Australia's national science agency. Are you surprised to learn that wi-fi was invented in Australia – why or why not? Do you know of any other significant Australian inventions?

Post-viewing questions

  1. In the video, Terry says 'people really didn’t believe that what we were doing was possible.' What reasons does he give for why people thought it was impossible? Why did the team at CSIRO persist in their efforts to invent it?
  2. Before watching this video, you identified challenges that Terry and the team may have faced in their efforts to develop wi-fi. Compare and contrast the challenges you identified with those described by Terry in the video.
  3. Terry describes how wi-fi helps education programs such as the School of the Air. Discuss how wi-fi has impacted these areas of life today:
    1. Education
    2. Work
    3. Relationships
    4. Recreation
    5. Business
  4. Do you think Terry and the team at CSIRO might be surprised by some of the ways their invention has impacted society? Why or why not? How might wi-fi continue to transform aspects of our lives into the future?
  5. Patents protect the rights of inventors. In the video, Terry describes how CSIRO started a lawsuit in 2005 against a number of American companies who were using their wi-fi technology without a licence. This included a computer chip manufacturer, mobile phone operators, and 14 of the largest tech companies in the world. CSIRO were successful in enforcing their patent and by 2015 had been awarded over $450 million in settlements. Do you think this outcome was fair – why or why not?
