This is a black-and-white photograph of the Hon. Alfred Deakin, Australia's second Prime Minister. It is an official portrait. It shows him wearing a white shirt and tie, with a vest. He is facing towards the camera and appears to be writing with a feather. As the second Prime Minister, he was often referred to as 'the constructor' due to his work building on the constitutional foundations of the nation. Interestingly, Deakin served a total of three terms in office, although they were not served continuously.
