[Underlined heading:] Friendly Reception in Australia
The Manager of the Chinese Soccer Team, Mr. Les Channing, said in Sydney this morning that the team’s tour of Australia had given members a new belief in democracy.
Speaking before the team left Sydney for Hong Kong by Qantas airliner, Mr. Channing said had heard much about the so-called White Australia policy before they came, but they found complete lack of discrimination of any kind. They were treated as equals and were amazed at the simple courtesy of even the bus conductors and shop attendants. The attitude of the people and conditions generally were greatly different from those they were accustomed to at home.
Mr. Channing said the great mass of the people in the Far East saw Australian Immigration policy as a barrier of personal antagonism rather than a protective artificial barrier.
The truth should be presented and one of the best ways to do this would be a continuous exchange of sporting teams between Australia, India, Pakistan, Malaya and other Far Eastern countries.
