Anzac hostels were established by the Repatriation Department to care for totally and permanently incapacitated (TPI) returned service personnel. After being rendered TPI as a result of wounds to his back and thighs in France, Albert Ward spent the remaining 43 years of his life confined to a bed on coach wheels at an Anzac hostel for returned veterans.
