About this record
In late 1914 the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) established a military training camp at Mena, near Cairo in Egypt. In this black-and-white photograph we see local Egyptians crushing barley to feed the many horses that had accompanied the Australian forces. The photograph comes from an album belonging to Major Richard Casey, who served in the AIF during the war and later, as Lord Casey, became Australia’s Governor-General from 1965 to 69. This photograph is from page 19 of the album.
