Anzac departure

This panorama captures the poignant moment as Anzac troops sailed past Breaksea Island on their way to Gallipoli. For many this was their last glimpse of Australia. The photographer took this image in contravention of wartime censorship restrictions.

Kyarra

Kyarra was launched in Scotland in 1903 as a luxury passenger liner. It was requisitioned as a hospital ship during the First World War. In May 1918, Kyarra was sunk by a torpedo in the English Channel, killing 6 of 126 crew.

Opening of provisional Parliament House

About 15,000 people gathered as Dame Nellie Melba sang the national anthem and the Duke of York officially opened the new Parliament House. Amongst the crowd was Wiradjuri man Jimmy Clements who had walked from Brungle Mission, near Tumut, New South Wales, to demonstrate 'his sovereign rights to the Federal Territory'.

The Great Flood – Rockhampton

After 5 days of relentless rain, the Fitzroy River reached a peak of 10.11 metres, its highest recorded level. Rockhampton was cut off by road and rail for 3 weeks. Tragically, 8 people died, and many were left homeless.
